Dear Concerned American,
I'm writing you today about a paralysis that is undermining the American church today.
Do you remember a famous Christian prophecy writer who sold millions of books predicting the end of the world in 1988?
As you know, it didn't happen. But that didn't stop him and others from speculating the end of the world again . . . and again . . . and again.
In fact, with the precipitous rise in end-times speculation over the past few years, I’m convinced that the credibility of the church and its message are at stake like never before.
Everywhere you look—on TV, on the radio, in the newspapers, at the bookstore—professing Christians are hocking their own delusional misinterpretations of current events and ancient Bible prophecy as the Gospel . . .
. . . which it most assuredly is NOT!
Yet another false prophet arises, it seems, with every month.
“God is telling me this,” they claim. “The world will end in 1988 . . . 1989 . . . 1990 . . . 1991 . . .”
“The time is short. Everything points to it,” Edgar Whisenant proclaimed from the front page headlines in the late 80s.
“Jesus will return this year,” “These are the last days,” and “Judgment Day is at hand!” the followers of Hal Lindsey and Harold Camping blazoned all over signs and cars in 1988 and 1994.
Obviously, these prophesiers haven’t been right once.
But the collective memory of most Americans is so short that a growing swell of evangelicals continues to fall prey to these specious warnings—even after over 40 years of perennial failure from these false prophets.
And now with Harold Camping’s new May 21st, 2011, Judgment Day nearing its necessary end, and with 2012—the end of the current Maya calendar—approaching amid a purportedly increasing slew of natural and man-made disasters, more people are tricked into believing these delusions every day.
And make no mistake. Every time another Christian falsely predicts the end of days, the world tries to discredit the Bible, the church, and all of Christendom.
It’s time to hold these wayward evangelical prophets accountable!
Authors Joel McDurmon, Bojidar Marinov, Jerry Johnson, James Jordan, and more will join me in answering the prophecy questions everyone’s asking right now:
- Are modern wars “signs of the end”?
- Is the modern nation of Israel a fulfillment of Bible prophecy?
- Will the Jewish temple be rebuilt?
- Is the “Antichrist” alive right now?
- Is the national ID card the “mark of the beast”?
- Do recent earthquakes; floods; and reports of the death of birds, fish, and cattle have any bearing on the end of the world?
But that’s not all!
I have officially invited popular Christian actor Kirk Cameron (Left Behind, Fireproof), one of the most central, high-profile figures in Christian prophecy, to attend the National Prophecy Conference and participate in a series of open forums.
Better yet, in my conversations with Kirk, he has expressed serious interest in attending our conference!
Christians all over America look up to Mr. Cameron as a hero for popularizing Bible prophecy. This is an amazing opportunity to have a public dialogue with him about this vital subject.
Furthermore, American Vision has also invited speakers and authors from opposing viewpoints to present their ideas in another open forum to provide balance to the discussion.
And with Lifeway’s 1300-acre resort bathed in mountain air and boasting a variety of comfortable accommodations and exciting recreation activities—including hiking, fishing, and tennis—it promises to be an exciting time for all.
Sincerely,
Gary DeMar
President, American Vision
P.S. An alarming increase in end-times speculation is crippling the church like never before, deluding thousands into giving up the fight for this world and Christ’s kingdom.
And every time another Christian falsely predicts the end of days, the world tries to discredit the Bible, the church, and all of Christendom.
The credibility of the church and the gospel are at stake. It’s time to hold these wayward evangelical prophets accountable!
Hollywood filmmaker Darren Doane will be filming the conference to make another spectacular documentary on Bible prophecy, and Christian actor Kirk Cameron—one of the most central, high-profile figures in the movement—has been invited to participate.
If so much of modern-day prophecy speculation is wrong, then what’s right? American Vision’s 2011 National Prophecy Conference will not only deal with the craziness of modern-day prophetic speculation. It will also systematically outline a well thought out biblical alternative.
